Description

The College of Nursing at South Dakota State University (SDSU) invites applications from and nominations of highly qualified candidates to be the next Assistant Dean for its Sioux Falls Campus. The Assistant Dean is responsible for program delivery, leadership and growth in faculty development, teaching excellence, community engagement, and integration of patient-care 
technologies in the College of Nursing at South Dakota State University. This administrative position in the College of Nursing (CON) provides leadership in curriculum development and evaluation, accreditation, interprofessional education, and personnel management as well as overall operations management of the Sioux Falls campus. 

The Assistant Dean is responsible for program delivery, leadership and growth in faculty development, teaching excellence, community engagement, and integration of patient-care technologies in the College of Nursing at South Dakota State University. This administrative position in the College of Nursing (CON) provides leadership in curriculum development and 
evaluation, accreditation, interprofessional education, and personnel management as well as overall operations management of the Sioux Falls campus. 


The primary position of the Assistant Dean is up to 75% administrative, which includes general and assigned professional service, with the expectation of teaching up to two courses or seminars per year in the College of Nursing undergraduate or graduate program. The remaining effort, at least 25%, is dedicated to research, scholarship, and creative activity. The Assistant Dean collaborates with Assistant Deans, the Academic Clinical Site Manager, Semester Coordinators, Specialty Coordinators, Directors, the Associate Dean for Academic Programs, and Dean to achieve mutual goals or address common concerns.
The Assistant Dean reports directly to the Associate Dean for Academic Program and is located in Sioux Falls, SD. 

RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE POSITION 
Major responsibilities of the Assistant Dean include, but are not limited to:
A. Program leadership
1. Collaborates with other Assistant Deans in assigning teaching and advising workloads 
to faculty and development of class schedules across all four sites.
2. Negotiates faculty assignments.
3. Collaborates to advance growth and development of clinical simulation within the College of Nursing including undergraduate, graduate, and interprofessional activities. 
4. Serves as a liaison between Undergraduate and Graduate Nursing and community agencies.
5. Provides input into curriculum development, evaluation, and plans for accreditation.
6. Oversees interprofessional education activities at specific site.
7. Develops and maintains strong relationships among faculty, centers/programs, and 
administrative offices to ensure and foster collaboration for the student experiences.
8. Oversees clinical scheduling and placement with clinical agencies for the 
undergraduate and graduate programs.
9. Participates in marketing, student recruitment and retention, and fundraising.

B. Personnel Supervision
1. Supervises and evaluates all faculty and staff as assigned at site.
2. Provides input to other Assistant Deans, Associate Dean for Academic Programs, and Director of Healthcare Simulation Center in evaluation of faculty and staff with indirect reporting lines.
3. Provides leadership by setting goals, assigning tasks, managing work schedules and workloads, and making employment recommendations.
4. Collaborates with faculty, Assistant Deans and Associate Dean for Academic Programs as needed to resolve problems among students and/or faculty.
5. Works closely with site faculty, the Director and Assistant Directors Nursing Student Services as needed to assure appropriate application of policies for student retention and progression.

C. Resource Management
1. Collaborates with the Associate Dean for Academic Programs and CON Dean to secure and manage adequate resources to maintain quality programs. 
2. Oversees recruitment, hiring and orientation of clinical teaching assistants and adjunct faculty in collaboration with Semester Coordinators and Associate Dean as assigned at site.

3. Consults with the Associate Dean of Academic Programs on hiring, performance improvement, evaluation and termination of faculty and staff at specific site.
4. Coordinates orientation for new employees at specific site.
5. Provides oversight for ordering equipment and supplies and monitoring inventory in collaboration with Healthcare Simulation Center (HCSC) Director.
6. Responsible for fiscal management of site including fiscal expenditures, site resources/inventory, and maintenance needs.

D. Faculty Development
1. Identifies faculty development needs related to teaching excellence, standards of best practice, and active learning.
2. Provides faculty guidance in quality teaching and curriculum development.
3. Guides faculty in carrying out the process of development, implementation, and evaluation of instructional activities.
4. Promotes faculty development that includes formal academic study and activities that enhance preparation for promotion and tenure using the CON Standards for Quality and Excellence in Faculty Roles.
5. Role models and mentors professional and community service and leadership activities with faculty.
E. Quality Management
1. Monitors adherence to education program outcomes. Provides leadership and administrative oversight to ensure high quality, student-centered education that aligns with best practice and regulatory standards. 
2. Provides leadership for program review including process improvement, program development, and academic assessment.
3. Generates and/or assists in preparing reports (e.g., CCNE Accreditation, Board of Nursing, Foundation).
F. Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity
1. Supports faculty to develop a research program or scholarship agenda that 
contributes to the CON priorities.
2. Mentors faculty and students in scholarship productivity.
3. Mentors faculty in the development of research collaborations.
4. Mentors faculty in internal and external proposals for research and scholarship.
G. Accountable for tasks and responsibilities delegated by the Associate Dean for Academic Programs or Dean. 



Requirements

 Minimum

1. Doctoral degree in nursing or related field.
2. Bachelor’s degree in nursing and at least one graduate degree in nursing (unless 
prepared as a Master’s entry Registered Nurse).
3. Licensed or eligible for licensure as a registered nurse by the SD Board of Nursing.
4. Minimum of five years’ experience in higher degree nursing education; curriculum 
development/implementation/evaluation; clinical nursing practice; and distance 
education delivery systems.4
5. Administrative experience in evaluating performance and directing activities.
6. Evidence of research, leadership capability, and ability to work effectively with 
interprofessional groups.
7. Experience in the application of clinical simulation and patient care technologies in 
nursing education.
8. Effective communication and strong interpersonal and problem-solving skills.
9. Experience in program development, implementation, and evaluation.

Desired

1. Expertise in alternative educational delivery systems for non-traditional students.
2. Experience in research methods.
3. Evidence of scholarly outcomes including publications and extramural funding.
4. Demonstrated leadership in community activities.
5. Experience with writing/administering program and scholarly grants.
6. Teaching experience in more than one degree-granting institution.
