Description
The RN at BMH supports the philosophy of nursing by planning and coordinating care for a group of patients within
his/her area. This individual has the responsibility to direct ancillary personnel for implementation of the patient’s plan of care and
has satisfactorily mastered the basic skills in the assigned area. The scope of nursing practice is focused on an assigned group of
patients and encompasses charge responsibilities as assigned. Performs within the limits of SC Nurse Practice Act, Code of Ethics
for nurses, hospital policies and procedures and Nursing Standards of Practice.

- Nursing unit within the hospital. May be stressful dealing with individuals, staff, patients, and family. Potential exposure
to radiation/toxic materials. Regularly exposed to Blood Borne materials (Category I) or Chemical Hazards. - Prolonged, extensive or considerable walking and standing. Assists with lifting, transport and moving patients.
Considerable reaching, stooping, bending, kneeling and crouching. Rotating shifts. 8–12-hour intervals. Frequent use of fine
motor skills.

Unit Specific Competencies:
- Demonstrates proper technique for dispensing medications to a sterile filed including identifying, verifying and labeling all
medications and fluids on sterile field. - Obtains appropriate supplies equipment for procedure, charge to the appropriate account. Inform Charge Nurse or OR
Manager of conflict in equipment or scheduled procedure. - Understands and demonstrates in depth knowledge of aseptic technique and maintaining a sterile environment.
- Checks all patients' paperwork, verifies all pre-op labs, x-rays, H&P, pre-op orders for accuracy per Universal Protocol policy.
- Demonstrates proper technique for surgical skin prep.
- Responsible for reviewing Surgeon Preference card to open case in a cost-effective manner and return supplies not used.
- Demonstrates knowledge for safe positioning of patient for surgical procedure as well as obtaining appropriate positioning
aids - Provides direct patient care, evaluates outcomes and adjusts nursing care processes as indicated to ensure optimal patient
outcomes. - Demonstrates knowledge of the functions of the Surgical Services equipment and operates this equipment in a safe and
appropriate manner. - Performs circulating duties as assigned, and other related duties as assigned or requested.
- Responsible for ensuring accuracy of recording on patient’s medical records.
- Provides assistants to the surgical team during operative procedures
- Orients, instructs and trains: students and new employees.
- Demonstrates proper technique for processing, identifying and documenting all specimens obtained by surgeon.
- Verbalizes roles in:
- Fire
- Malignant Hyperthermia
- Codes
- Is capable of performing in assigned procedure.
- Performs other related duties as required.
Requirements
Job Qualifications:
Education: Ability to obtain and maintain a South Carolina Nursing License
Experience: Previous experience in surgical services preferred.
Job Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- Possesses visual, auditory, verbal acuity
- Good communication and customer service skills
Certification/Licenses:
- Current South Carolina RN license
- BLS required prior to first clinical shift (must be issued by the American Heart Association)
- ACLS required within 6 months of hire (must be issued by the American Heart Association)
Ongoing Competencies: Annual review of Fire/Safety/Disaster Plan
