Description
The registered nurse at BMH supports the philosophy of nursing by planning and coordinating care for a group of patients within his/her area. This individual has the responsibility to direct ancillary personnel for implementation of the patient's plan of care and has satisfactorily mastered the basic skills in the assigned area. The scope of nursing practice is focused on an assigned group of patients and encompasses charge responsibilities as assigned. Performs within the limits of SC Nurse Practice Act, Code of Ethics for nurses, hospital policies and procedures, and Nursing Standards of Practice.

- Nursing unit within the hospital. May be stressful dealing with individuals, staff, patients, and family. Potential exposure to radiation/toxic materials. Regularly exposed to Blood Borne materials (Category 1) or Chemical Hazards.
- Prolonged, extensive or considerable walking and standing. Assists with lifting, transport, and moving patients. Considerable reaching, stooping, bending, kneeling, and crouching. Rotating shifts, 8–12-hour intervals.

Job Specific Duties & Responsibilities
- Unit Specific Competencies
- Monitors and ensures accuracy of recording on patient's medical record
- Provide direct patient care, evaluate outcomes and adjust nursing care processes as indicated to ensure optimal patient care.
- Checks all patient paperwork, verifies all pre-op labs, x-rays, pre-op orders for accuracy per Universal Protocol Policy.
- Assists physician during diagnostic and therapeutic procedures.
- Performs approved diagnostic procedures.
- Assesses patients' status pre, during, and post procedure
- Demonstrates knowledge of the functions of Endoscopic equipment and operates this equipment in a safe and appropriate manner.
- Communicates effectively with all health team members, patients, and visitors.
- Responsible for ensuring accuracy of recording on patient's medical records.
- Prepare room, equipment, and supplies for the day.
- Orients, instructs, and trains students and new employees.
- Demonstrates proper technique for processing, identifying, and documenting all specimens obtained by surgeon.
- Verbalizes role in: Fire, Malignant Hyperthermia, and Codes.
- Post Op call backs are completed and documented in a timely manner.
- Serves as a resource for staff.
- Demonstrates ability to open and close unit.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Requirements
Job Qualifications:
Education
- High School Diploma and Nursing Degree required.
- Must obtain and maintain a valid South Carolina Nursing License
Experience
- Previous experience in surgical services preferred
Job Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Possesses visual, auditory, verbal acuity
- Good communication and customer service skills
Certification/Licenses
- Current South Carolina RN License
- BLS required prior to first clinical shift (Must be issued by the American Heart Association)
- ACLS required within 6 months of hire (Must be issued by the American Heart Association)
Ongoing Competencies
- Annual Review of Fire/Safety/Disaster Plan
