CHRISTUS Children’s Hospital/Baylor College of Medicine
Founded on a legacy of service dating back to 1869, CHRISTUS began the journey to establish the first and only freestanding children’s hospital in San Antonio in 2012. As part of CHRISTUS Health, CHRISTUS Children’s is built on sacred ground where the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word opened the city’s first hospital to care for a community suffering from an outbreak of cholera.
CHRISTUS Children’s has evolved into a nationally distinctive academic pediatric center through its long-standing academic partnership with Baylor College of Medicine formed in 2013. Baylor College of Medicine consistently ranks among the top medical schools in the U.S. and has been named best in Texas for clinical research.
Highlights include:
- More than 600 credentialed medical staff members, 125 nurse practitioners and physician associates, 39 pediatric residents and nearly 1,400 Associates at the downtown campus
- The Max and Minnie Tomerlin Voelcker Clinical Research Center which has nearly 200 active research studies supported by $5.3 million in state, federal and foundation grants.

Life in San Antonio
San Antonio is one of Texas’ most historic and charming metropolitan areas, blending Old West history, Spanish heritage and all the energy of a big city with the warm, welcoming feel of a small town.
You will find an outstanding quality of life here with:
- Attractive housing pricings (comparatively lower than other large U.S. cities) and no state income tax
- Top-tier public and private schools
- Sunny weather and mild winters with an annual average of more than 300 days of sunshine
- A rich cultural and culinary scene
- Proximity to the Texas Hill Country, Austin, Houston and the Gulf Coast
As the nation’s seventh-largest city and Texas’ second largest city, San Antonio has a rapidly growing pediatric population that has expanded more than 18 percent since 2000. That population is expected to grow an additional 30 percent over the next 20 years, creating strong long-term demand and opportunity for pediatric leadership.
